Elio Grasso, Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate, 2010
Elio Grasso is one of Monforte d'Alba's most beloved traditional Barolo houses, founded in 1978 and run today by Elio's son Gianluca. Ginestra Casa Maté is the estate's south-facing block inside the celebrated Ginestra cru, on calcareous-clay marl at 300 to 350 meters. Winemaking is as classical as it gets: malolactic in stainless, then two years of patient aging in 25-hectoliter Slavonian botte, no new wood, no makeup. The 2010 vintage is widely considered one of the greatest Piedmont years of the modern era, structured and pure and built for the long haul. Fifteen years on this wine is finally entering its drinking window, layered and silken, with the muscle to coast for another twenty years.
